Yes, you've correctly identified my mistake.

Some family members had different userids on the two machines.  That
led to some files not transferring correctly.  Stupid mistake, but I've
learned my lesson (the hard way).  I've since ensured users on both
boxes are the same.

I used rsync to go between the two boxes, but called the rsync script
using sudo, which meant that some stuff got stored on the NAS as owner
root, which made a mess of things for me.

As for the mozilla stuff, I'd gotten tired of watching hundreds of
stupid mozilla cache files get backed up only to be deleted on the next
round, so I conveniently sped up my script my omitting the .mozilla
directory from being backed up.  Oops.

Fortunately, as an amateur sysadmin at home I fully earn the salary I'm
paid for doing the work ...
