Well, almost, though it does shake one's confidence to see such an
obvious solution put forth.  Why I thought I needed to install all of
vlc, I no longer recall.  

While your suggestion does indeed work, it doesn't work well.  Playing
a dvd via my usb dvd player/burner and xine yields herky-jerky
playback.  No doubt due to my ancient hardware, a wimpy 1.5MHz P4 mobo
with a mere 847M RAM.  I think the USB is 1.5, though it may be 2.0.
OTOH, playback works much better with LiMP, the ancient (2005) 100M
liveCD, though that has probs too, like accumulated packets piling up
and disrupting playback.  So, I gotta pause and let system catch up
about every 10 mins, then continue.  DVDs might play better on my
box'es IDE dvd player, which I'm loathe to use cuz I must partially
disassemble case and open player drawer manually, its digital eject
function and manual button unreliable.  Bottom line, I need a new damn
system!, which I'm currently researching.  Besides, jes got another
TV, so can go back to watching dvds with old std dvd player.

Anyway, thank you for the suggestion.  It would probably work
better with a faster system.  We shall see.  ;)
