Slackware has had very few security updates since coming out.

You don't have to use any of these things, of course. I still use
fluxbox as my window manager. You can disable and/or avoid most of the
rest of these tools.

Slackware's default package manager does no dependency checking. But in
10+ years I've seldom (like once or twice) gotten into dependency hell
with CentOS. (I did it often with Debian, but I'm blaming PEBKAC for
those.)

Octothorpe, you would have loved the Doze update that got pushed
onto my work laptop in the middle of what had been a productive
afternoon today without any advance notice. I was working away
on two monitors, a full-screen VNC viewer with an X session on
one (1920x1200) monitor and Outhouse and Firefox and a couple
other things on the other (1920x1080) monitor, all placed and
sized for optimal productivity. With _NO_ advance warning, both
monitors went black. Then the VNC viewer showed up,
non-full-screen, mostly but not entirely in the other monitor,
with the Outhouse and Firefox windows a quarter (0.5x0.5)
original size behind the VNC viewer. It looked like what might
have happened if the display settings had been changed to a
single 640x480 or maybe 1024x768 monitor and then changed back.

I screamed at a corporate IT droid, but the evidence indicates it
most likely got pushed in directly from Micky$oft. When I shut
down the laptop to try to get a clean boot, it paused for a while
saying, "Configuring Windows Updates, ...", which doesn't happen
unless an update has been received.

In 13 years of using Linux at home, I am quite sure I have
_NEVER_ had a Linux update do anything like that. I wish they
would let me use a Linux desktop, but corporate IT insists on
Mickey$oft laptops.

Are you sure? It used to be possible on filter on any header on KNode on
KDE3, although it was a bit hidden. It may be possible on KDE4 too.

The idea of a slack user that can't build their own source still boggles the mind a bit.

Particulary if you have used slack since the good olde days.

NB.
You should have read Eric's text. The binary does not include the
copyright protected software. While there is a place from which to D/L
the fully functional binary, instead get Eric's source and SlackBuilds
for avidemux, faac, ffmpeg. lame, libdvdcss and maybe also handbrake
(Yuk). Build and install (and never look back).

Then get his *source* (NOT binary) for vlc and build + install that. The
site supports rsync, which eases the D/L of all (52) those packages and
patches (12). The resultant VLC is well worth the "trouble". It'll play
damn near anything including BD, DVD and streams. The effort Eric put
into a monolithic VLC is beyond words, and the result is unparalleled.

No.

I'm done with all that. I've got LiMP. I'll also be looking at other
slack derivatives or other distros that are more multimedia friendly. I've used slack
for 13 yrs cuz it gave me something I wanted. Now I want something
else. That's what linux is all about. If I can dual-boot slack and
whatever other distro I decide meets my needs, so much the better.

As for alienbob, I've no problem with him, whatsoever. In fact, I've

Since your head is firmly shoved up your asshole. I'll just buzz off and
NOT need to dual boot an unsupported distro.

Well since this is totally off topic here in a hardware group
I think I will only say that the capabilities you seek come along with
PCLinux OS at least in PCLOS KDE 13.04. Works a treat on my laptop
Compaq CQ60-215DX with Athlon X2 64 though I do have occasional
problems. This last Spring I switched from Mandriva 2010.2 PowerPack
and the 2011 Powerpack was unusable on this machine so I heaved a sigh
and started trying various other flavors of Linux. PCLOS had just
released its first 64-bit version and I tried it out and liked it
but the 1st full 64-bit release came out before I tried to install it.
Kernel is 3.2.18 and KDE is 4.10.1 and is bit confusing for me but
solid on this notebox.

I found a DVD player in some garbage last year that I figured wasn't
working since the cover was off and looked like someone was trying to
clean the drive. It has an HDMI output, and it did play when I put it
back together, though stopped when I put it on the stack. I havent' got
back to it. My DTV is only 19 or 22 inch and only 2 years old, but it has
analog input still.

I'm sure some of those DVD players I saw at garage sales on Saturday had
hdmi output, I couldn't be bothered looking. I'd planned to get a blu-ray
player back in December, for the output and since blu-ray discs are
starting to appear at garage sales, but I stalled and missed the sales. I
could get one for not much more than my DVD player was back in 2004.
Plus, all the cheap blu-ray players I was looking at could be networked,
one could even do wifi out of the box. Kind of interesting features, I'll
probably get one this December when the pre-Christmas sales kick in.

If some distributions play DVDs and others don't, then I would think
Slackware could do it, you just have to do the work. I thought I could
play DVDs at one point on my old 1GHz computer, but I also remember some
problems like maybe it wasn't fast enough. Out of the box, I couldn't
play MP3s, I had to add something, I can't remember if that's still the
case.

If some distributions can play DVDs, then the issue is getting the stuff
to add to Slackware.

Actually, it is.

Slack WILL play mp3s. It will play audio CDs. What it won't play is
encrypted DVDs. That's the plain ol' movie DVD you get from yer video
store. It WILL copy some DVDs, like guitar instructional videos, cuz
those are un-encrypted. But Slack lacks a lotta multimedia support.
Both VLC and ffmpeg are huge pkg's and require a lotta depenze support
which slack jes does not have. Even though Slack includes a working
version of audacious, an xmms clone, it does not support audacity, a
program that allows you to record mp3 files you may be listening to
from an audio CD or youtube. Get it? You can record from yer own box
and not hafta patch one box into another. But, that's a 2-3 doz pkg
upgrade. Inkscape! Same thing. Requires ffmpeg. Check Slacky and
count the depenze for that pig.

Hey. I'm not complaining. I LOVE Slackware. Been using it
exclusively for 13 yrs. Learned a lot. How to compile code. How to
admin a Linux box. How to admin a network. Monster cool!! NOw, I'm
old and wanna draw and paint and watch crappy movies. Slack sucks for
that! Time to pick a distro that does what I want. Isn't that what
Linux is all about? ;)

I use CentOS (based on RHEL), 5.9 64-bit+xen on my desktop and 32-bit on my
laptop and have but have 6.4 32-bit and 64-bit as VMs on my desktop. I have
mplayer (from the RPMForge repo), audacity (from the RPMForge repo), and
inkscape (from the epel repo). I have the rpmforge and epel repos rsynced to
thumb drives (along with the CentOS updates). It was trivial to install off of
these packages with a simple command:

sudo yum --enablerepo=epel install inkscape
sudo yum --enablerepo=rpmforge install mplayer audacity

(I snarfed a rpm called 'mplayer-codecs-extra' containing additional codecs
from http://www.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/ and installed that
separately.)

(yes, there are a pile of depenencies, but yum took care of it - *I* did not
have to hunt around for them.)

It sounds like you need distro like CentOS.

Slackware isn't the problem. You need to get libdvdcss from
slackbuilds.org. Then mplayer will be able to play your
encrypted DVDs.

I used to think Arch was similar to Slackware (my main distro). Then
Arch started reconfiguring the system, and including systemd, so I
realized what a pain in the ass rolling releases can be. You have to
make these changes yourself, rather than just installing and configuring
the next version of your distro that incorporates any such changes for
you. Arch plays on the bleeding edge, and when the developers start
switching directions and changing gears, the ride isn't so fun any more.

All you have to do is read the news announcements and keep an eye on the
wiki. There is always plenty of notice about upcoming changes, and you
can wait to apply them until you understand what they're changing.

In many ways Arch requires you to be more hands-on than some other
distros, but in return you get the latest software. I found running Arch
to be a lot of fun.

I watch commercial DVDs on my Slackware box, and it only took one
external package to accomplish it. You have to get and install
libdvdcss to do the actual decryption of the DVD. Slackware comes
with libdvdread and xine, and with those two packages and libdvdcss,
you can watch DVDs. Easy-peasy.

Cheers,
Rob

Well, almost, though it does shake one's confidence to see such an
obvious solution put forth. Why I thought I needed to install all of
vlc, I no longer recall.

While your suggestion does indeed work, it doesn't work well. Playing
a dvd via my usb dvd player/burner and xine yields herky-jerky
playback. No doubt due to my ancient hardware, a wimpy 1.5MHz P4 mobo
with a mere 847M RAM. I think the USB is 1.5, though it may be 2.0.
OTOH, playback works much better with LiMP, the ancient (2005) 100M
liveCD, though that has probs too, like accumulated packets piling up
and disrupting playback. So, I gotta pause and let system catch up
about every 10 mins, then continue. DVDs might play better on my
box'es IDE dvd player, which I'm loathe to use cuz I must partially
disassemble case and open player drawer manually, its digital eject
function and manual button unreliable. Bottom line, I need a new damn
system!, which I'm currently researching. Besides, jes got another
TV, so can go back to watching dvds with old std dvd player.

Anyway, thank you for the suggestion. It would probably work
better with a faster system. We shall see. ;)
