Baloney.  56kb/s is the best you can hope to do with the analog phone
system.  ISDN can go faster, but that's not analog.

I worked for AT&T for a long time and could explain WHY that's the hard
limit, but for the sake of brevity....

Even then, 56k is the best you can hope for. You're only going to see
that if your lines are exceptionally clean and you're fairly close to
the central office.  In reality, 33.6k is about the best you can
reasonably EXPECT to get. Anything faster is a bonus.
