Since at that point the author had not told us what it was he wanted to
do, the suggestion was NOT stupid. He was worried about delays, and
speed to getting a bit from the instrument to the computer at the other
end on a modem is small. Plus one can always compress the audio, so that
6KB/s is not that bad-- not super hifi I agree, but better than a
straight phone line.

Since all of those conversions HAVE to take place anyway, the only
difference is the bandwidth (the 56Kb/s-- and besides phone modems can
do better than 56Kb)

Uh, no, and the delay then is hours (you have to finish playing the
piece before you can drive the thumb drive containing that piece over).
