I have Gentoo systems that have been continuously updated over the past
several years.  They're all just as close to "current" as any similar system
you might've set up in the past week or so.  The initial installation of
Gentoo on my VPS goes back to when I first set up that service...2013,
perhaps?

Raspbian usually can update itself without trashing the system, too.
