I intentionally did not add that, because I was testing with python2.7,
python3.5, and pypy.

Yes, it turns out that Python 3 does not allow that form - you need
"open" instead of "file".  See my other posts.

We have no idea what the actual problem is - so no way of telling how
much error checking or flexibility is needed.

(I've snipped the rest - your overlong lines are too time-consuming to fix.)
