Like you, I haven't considered Hugh's "disambiguifiers" important enough 
to spend any time on but, without taking sides in this argument, I think 
it is worth identifying why they can't be POSTPONEd on your system. IIRC 
there has been no hint that they are invalid Forth and so should be able 
to be POSTPONEd. So either it is an unexpected problem with the 
disambiguifiers or your system is at fault. My interest is that the 
Forth test suite might have a hole that needs filling.

A simple test using a disambiguifier (a silly name, I'm already sick of 
typing/pasting it) works on all systems I've tried it on.

: if  state @ 0= abort" *** no interpretation semantics for: IF ***" 
postpone if ; immediate   \ The disambiguifier
: if postpone if ; immediate
: x if ." true" else ." false" then ;
