Vendors and free system maintainers have an obligation to a body of users, many of whom have commercial projects of many years standing that they depend upon for their livlihood and that of their employers. Moving forward to better standards must consider the needs of those users, but be done with minimal disruption to those existing systems. Individuals who don't have those obligations often feel different motivations. In the case of Chuck, we have a creative genius whose motivation is to explore new ideas and techniques; with no obligations to any body of users, he does not need standards. All of those motivations are valid and genuine, but a standards group should appropriately be concerned with users, who are their main constituents. Cheers, Elizabeth -- Elizabeth R.
