Okay... You misunderstood. A input line can be empty because it's empty (after newline is stripped) or due to an error. An eof() will only return true at eof or on error. Nothing to do with the input line. But if some error occurs while reading the line, after eof returns false, then a blank line is returned (due to fgets returning NULL). The /next/ eof() will then return true, assuming the error persists. I get this output with a simple loop controlled by eof(); the first number is the length of the line, not including the gap or newline: 17 TO:Prime Minister 24 FROM:Ministry of Defence 27 SUBJECT:Intelligence Report 15 PRIORITY:Urgent 15 DATE:13/12/2016 16 ---------------- 64 No intercepts from Russian military units in Ukraine. This means 35 they are maintaining radio silence. 0 65 Almost certainly they are preparing to attack. Request permission 30 to take defensive precautions. And there should be an END-OF-TRANSMISSION line at the end of the message, otherwise how do you know there isn't anything further? It might be subject to the 'python' syndrome. -- Bartc
