They need not to study. But if they want to, studying was free in communist countries only, and western countries honour intellectual property. Even if studying in communist Czechoslovakia was free of charge ( if you were granted to study - different story ) I remember we paid for manuscripts more than 1.5 dollar in late 80s, and for books much more, if not borrowed in library. -- Poutnik ( the Czech word for a wanderer )
