None that I know of (assuming that p1 and p2 point to char objects).
But if *p2 contains a representation of 0 with the sign bit set (on a
one's-complement system), I wouldn't be surprised if the assignment
cleared the sign bit.  Or perhaps the language rules require the
representation to be copied -- but just by using "unsigned char" rather
than "char" I don't have to worry about it.

IMNSHO, discourse about C is improved by using terms defined by the
standard with their proper meanings.  The word "char" has well defined
meaning, and it's not the way you want to use it.

If I were inventing a new C-like language, I'd probably call the type
corresponding to C's "unsigned char" "byte".  But I'm not (feel free to
breathe a sign of relief).

Compare the length of "unsigned " with the amount of time and text
you've expended complaining that it's too long.
