I think you mean unsigned char. That's how the standard defines object
representation, and it avoids confusion when plain char is signed and
has two distinct representations for 0.

The character types are not allowed to have padding bits. If an
unsigned char object has some extra bits associated with it that do not
contribute to its value (perhaps a hardware parity bit?), then those
bits would not be visible from C code, and as far as C is concerned they
effectively would not exist.
