Kopieren innerhalb vom RAM ist durchaus schneller als ständiges Geswappe mit weniger RAM. Nicht alles was im RAM-Cache gelandet ist, wurde von Programmen auch verwendet (Stichwort Readahead). Wenn man die Puffer unterhalb 16MB hält und die MMU Pointer der laufenden Applikationen auf die Speicherstellen passend verbiegt, sollte sich der Overhead in Grenzen halten. Und da uns suggeriert wurde, dass nur die Taktrate des Prozessors wichtig sei, wurde an allem anderen gespart. RAM, I/O-Subsystem, vernünftiges OS, etc. Und, nicht immer war von vorneherein klar, was denn der Zweck sein soll. Gerade bei Privatanwendern. Das hat sich ziemlich gewandelt.
