Podolski, to the German nationalist, was always a German. His
grandparents were "Reichsbürger", meaning they were ethnic German --
Schlesier, to be precise.

Which may be true for most people today, but it is not correct for those
who think in racial terms, or those who subscribe to the idea of
Grossdeutschland. It was not true for Hitler or those who believed in
his screwy ideology. They thought in terms of culture and language, and
they made no difference between an Austrian, a Volga German or a
Sudetendeutscher.

Which was not really an issue back when "Mein Kampf" was written. At
that time, Scottish nationalism had yet to flourish and natives of the
British Isles quite happily and uncontroversially called themselves
"British" and would not have objected to the use of "England" to
describe their nation.

It is quite acceptable as a phrase.

It was written in 1921/22, fercrissakes. OF COURSE it is antiquated.

Yes, he would. If he was old-school -- as Hitler, being a product of
the 19th century, certainly was. If he was ill-educated and trying to

Go look at a map. When Charlemagne died and left his empire to his
three sons, what is now (West) Germany was the Eastern part.

We are now 71 years after the war. What we think now is irrelevant to
the textual analysis of a work written in 1922. Back then, these ideas
were far from discredited -- they were part of mainstream politics.
