Drug-based medicine is actually the 'alternative medicine'.

Prior to the 20th century medicine was in almost any case, what now 
falls into the realm commonly called 'medicine'.

But there existed medicine before the 20th century.


E.g. traditional Chinese medicine was an ancient form of medicine and 
was accepted and highly developed.

The modern form of curing a disease with a pill or two, is actually 
quite young.

So you could regard this system and the idea of synthetic drugs as 
'alternative'. It's the alternative to collecting herbs and to grind 
Tiger bones or so.

Other forms of medicine fall gradually out of fashion, like physical 
treatment. E.g. acupuncture or water treatment were once regarded as 
medicine.


The problem is, that people are not that happy with the system and look 
for alternatives to pills.

This is, what makes them look at traditional methods, what pills were 
actually the alternative for.
