Yes ... superstitious folk remedies whose chances of success were little 
better than random.

And it has conquered the planet because it *works*.  The alternative 
name for Western medicine is "evidence-based medicine" -- because its 
treatments and procedures and drugs are tested, again and again, and 
again.
