What I try to prove is, that the English version is the Original and that the German is a translation from the English version. So I take your text as a random pick and analyse differences. My aim is to find mistakes or weaknesses. the 'better' or 'stronger' version must be the original. Why is that? Well, that is physics and called 'Second law of thermodynamics'. This states, that likely states come from unlikely states, but not reverse. E.g. a functioning wrist watch is less likely than a broken one and wrist watches do not fix themselves. So good text can have bad translation, but bad text cannot have good translation. Now you have to trust about my abilities to speak German (or ask someone who can). Now I use google.translator for the first part: "The best indicator of the value of his opinions" is what google makes out of "Der beste Gradmesser für den Wert seiner Gesinnung" But the English text says: "The best rule whereby the sincerity of his convictions" So the German text is simply wrong.
