I think there have been studies in North America as well showing that 
people with fanciful or otherwise unusual names don't get taken 
seriously, from social class rather than strictly racial assumptions. 
Based on strictly anecdotal evidence (I don't remember reading any 
recent studies), this does seem to be changing slowly for some names, 
given to middle-class children after the fashion for odd names, 
particularly for girls, spread, and those children grew up and moved 
into responsible positions so that now some names considered low-class 
forty years ago are much more mainstream.

It used to be considered proper years ago to give children formal, 
serious names, often after older relatives names along the same 
principles, and even if the children were actually called by some odd 
nickname. After all, they might prefer a formal traditional name, or be 
taken more seriously with one, as adults.
