I haven't looked your code (tar/gz is always a bit of a palaver on Windows).

But how relevant is the image file format? In my dealings with this sort 
of thing, images are loaded into some raw format in memory, it doesn't 
matter what, processed, then written back to a file in the same or other 
format.

Or are you dealing with the image inside the TIFF file in situ?

(I haven't worked with TIFF since the 90s. These days I might use BMP or 
PPM for uncompressed images, and JPG for compressed. I seem to remember 
that TIFF was rather complex. But still, once in memory, none of that 
matters.)
