It depends on where one looks.

PNM formats do not support embedded ICC profiles and the PNG
format does not support floating point data, and ICC profiles
and floating point data are very important in a lot of image
applications.  But TIFF supports both as well as other things
like CMYK data (for printing applications).  TIFF, with proprietary
tags, is also the basis to most digital camera RAW images.

There aren't much TIFF images on the web due to the large storage
sizes.  TIFF, especially with high bit depths, does not compress
well.  It is a lossless format and is used where lossless formats
are appropriate.
