No (though maybe it's an issue of wording). A word address may very
well not be a byte address, but if the machine has a C compiler, a word
address can always be /converted/ to a byte address. The reverse is not
always possible (at least in any useful way).
To take an example I know well
union {
unsigned int address;
int *ip;
char *cp;
} u;
int i;
u.ip = &i;
printf("%u ", u.address);
u.cp = (char *)&i;
printf("%u\n", u.address);
u.cp += 1;
printf("%u ", u.address);
u.ip = (int *)u.cp;
printf("%u\n", u.address);
might print
402 804 805 402
A word address converts to a bytes address by being shifted left, the
bottom bit indicating which byte is being addressed. The conversion
back is a right shift, losing the bottom bit.
