Use max_align_t if it's available (I think it was introduced in C11).

If not, using a union containing members of types long, long long,
intmax_t, double, long double, void*, and void(*)(void) is very
likely to be good enough.  (I'm thinking about the possibility
of long double being implemented in software, and not requiring
an alignment as strict as double.  I have no idea whether such
implementations exist, but an extra line in the union definition
is cheap.)

long long and intmax_t were added in C99, so if you need to target
pre-C99 implementations you can check __STDC_VERSION__.
