I think you mean loop not macro. The original code set the initial
value in the loop that prints the headers.
It's hard to know the best way to do this in the small program, but a
loop is certainly more flexible than writing out the initial value five
times.

They are not proprietary -- they are an optional annex in the latest C
standard. They are not universally implemented, but that's not really
the same as proprietary.
