My routines do take a void* pointer.  If they took void**
they couldn't be invoked with the address of a pointer to
integer (&a, where a is int*) as I invoke them.  The
automatic conversion of int** to void* works well, but
inside I have to access the underlying pointer (object of
type int*), which I do in a non-portable manner, by
converting from void* to char**.  As Ben has explained, one
is unlikely ever to come across a machine where it doesn't
work, but still it is not portable.

I thought about storing a "magick" byte and checking it as a
necessary condition that the parameter points to a real
dynamic array.  This dynamic type checking can be made
conditional and used in debug builds only.
