Yes. I was and still am trying to report a fault and I just get disconnected with the message "there are no faults in your area". It's shocking how overwhelmingly incompetent virgin media is. I don't know the best way to report a fault, although I'm sure someone here has a better idea. However, if you can tell us what form the fault takes it may well be that some advice can be offered that avoids going to Virgin (although conversely it may well be that the advice is that it has to go to them) > It's shocking how overwhelmingly incompetent virgin media is. > They're all as bad as each other really. I know it's no comfort but every telco has more complexities to it than they can possibly imagine let alone manage. Allied to that a reduction of training and hence expertise amongst the workforce over the years and you end up with any issues being a crapshoot of whether they are easily resolved or not. > Sorry about my spelling. > No problem - it's just it formed such a large part of your original post that it was one of the few things to comment on!

To the OP, disconnect your modem from the cable and then complain. Their system should see a fault on your line and when you get through to someone you can explain the issue. It is best to ring faults later rather than earlier as you will likely then get a UK centre rather than someone in Asia who can barely speak English and will not deviate from a letter of their script. If they won't play ball, ask to be put through to Retentions as you wish to leave. Retentions will solve the issue for you and probably give you some discount - they carry a lot of clout. -- Woody harrogate3 at ntlworld dot com

Our part of the world was once served by Cable & Wireless. Would that history offer any insight into the variability?

C&W were generally a good supplier as they had a large business infrastructure so their install and maintenance quality was (IME) quite good. My area was Bell Cablemedia and also had good install standards. I think most of the complaint issues come from areas using using landline broadband rather than true (co-ax) cable. -- Woody harrogate3 at ntlworld dot com

So quiz neighbours before signing up. I would have though the chaps at SamKnows would have had independently viewable stats up online somewhere to aid folks in choosing their service. * Came up on the last series of BBC Watchdog -- Adrian C

I would never give them a penny. Sorry to hear about you bad experiences with VM. Mine has been the opposite. I've been with them, though their various guises since they were United Artists in the Croydon (S London) area back in the 90s. With them from dial up through to 200+ Mb/s BB. Largely consistent service over the years. I've had problems, who hasn't, whichever supplier you are with, but mainly minor ones, easily sorted and nothing that has tempted me to move away from them. Like both Tweed and Woody in the thread above I've been happy with the service since 2000 & before. -- Pete
