Australian researchers recently bred Port Jackson sharks in a tank warmed to a temperature likely to occur at the end of the century if climate change continues: https://www.livescience.com/64261-global-warming-makes-sharks-right-handed.html -- "To explain the unknown by the known is a logical procedure; to explain the known by the unknown is a form of theological lunacy." ~David Brooks "I get fooled all the time by the constant hosiery parade in here." ~Checkmate

[This followup was posted to alt.checkmate and a copy was sent to the cited author.] Warning! Always wear ANSI approved safety goggles when reading posts by Checkmate! I'm not surprised that some of the sharks died. Sharks tend to not survive well in aquarium tanks. Whether sharks show a preference for swimming to the left or right... who gives a fuck? Perhaps the first shark decided to go right, and the others just followed him. I also liked this little gem: "Sharks born in hotter waters may be forced to develop more quickly and may be left with physically smaller brains than sharks who develop under today's conditions, the team wrote." Will they be drafting a research grant proposal to try to answer this burning question as well? Do "right-handed" sharks have smaller brains? Is being right-handed a sign of smaller braininess? Are you going to stay up nights worrying about small-brained, right-handed sharks now? Maybe there's a bible story about sharks where we can learn the truth without spending money except for the free DVD you get with a small donation of only $19.95/month. Oh. Here it is, in Engish: Genesis 1:20-23 English Standard Version (ESV) 20 And God said, Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens. 21 So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. And they were vegans before Adam and Eve sinned with the snake and the apple: Genesis 1:29-31 English Standard Version (ESV) 29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. So, there's the facts. Send me $19.95 via Paypal. -- Grizzly H.

The point kensi is making is: warming the planet is going to have all kinds of consequences one might not expect. Consider this: if shark behavior is affected at all, what if they also become more aggressive toward humans? On the other hand, perhaps they go extinct, removing a keystone predator from marine ecosystems, with the kind of knock-on consequences that happened when wolves were removed from Yellowstone for decades before eventually being reintroduced? And if there's weird stuff like this that we only will be able to anticipate because of an unlikely experiment that was done, how much else will take us completely by surprise? And how will these surprises *interact* with one another? We see all these things doing something unusual. This thingy teetering here, that thing out of position over there, and so forth. And you have to ask yourself: is it more likely that we're in a slapstick comedy or a Final Destination movie plot? I suggest you study a few real-world disaster reels. No, actually, Nadegda is 100% correct. It is a warning that we need to expect the unexpected here. Climate change will have consequences far beyond a slightly higher reading on a thermometer. Some of those consequences will be bizarre and some of them will be deadly. -- "To explain the unknown by the known is a logical procedure; to explain the known by the unknown is a form of theological lunacy." ~David Brooks "I get fooled all the time by the constant hosiery parade in here." ~Checkmate
