Here are a list of quotes from him many cult-like followers of Stallman tend
to disagree with. I suspect Fabian Russell would not be happy with most.

  Linus Torvalds:
    -----
Any program is only as good as it is useful.
    -----
I never felt that the naming issue was all that important,
but I was obviously wrong, judging by how many people felt. I
tell people to call it just plain Linux and nothing more.
    -----
I'm generally a very pragmatic person: that which works,
    works.
    -----
In many cases, the user interface to a program is the most
important part for a commercial company: whether the programs
works correctly or not seems to be secondary.
    -----
    Microsoft isn't evil
    -----
An infinite number of monkeys typing into GNU emacs would
    never make a good program.
    -----
Anybody who tells me I can't use a program because it's not
open source, go suck on rms. I'm not interested. 99% of that
I run tends to be open source, but that's my choice, dammit.
    -----
... even if the Hurd didn't depend on Linux code (and as far
as I know, it does, but since I think they have their design
heads firmly up their *sses anyway with that whole
microkernel thing, I've never felt it was worth my time even
looking at their code), I don't believe a religiously
motivated development community can ever generate as good
    code except by pure chance.
    -----
Your problem has nothing to do with git, and everything to do
with emacs. And then you have the gall to talk about "Unix
design" and not gumming programs together, when you yourself
use the most gummed-up piece of absolute sh*t there is!
    -----
I may make jokes about Microsoft at times, but at the same
time, I think the Microsoft hatred is a disease.
    -----
There are "extremists" in the free software world, but that's
one major reason why I don't call what I do "free software"
any more. I don't want to be associated with the people for
whom it's about exclusion and hatred.
    -----
Let's put it this way: if you need to ask a lawyer whether
what you do is "right" or not, you are morally corrupt. Let's
not go there. We don't base our morality on law.
    -----

And comments from other big names in the open source world:

  Mark Shuttleworth:
    -----
I think we don't yet deliver a good enough user experience. I
think we deliver a user experience for people that have a
reason to want to be on the Linux platform, either because of
price or because of freedom. If that was your primary reason,
    Linux is the right answer.
But if you are somebody who is not too concerned about price,
who is not too concerned about freedom, I don't think we can
say the Linux desktop offers the very best experience. And
that's something we have to change, that's something I'm
committed to work on, focusing increasing amounts of
resources of Canonical on figuring out on how we actually
move the desktop experience forward to compete with Mac OS X.
    ...
Second thing is, we just can't do this only on GNOME or just
on KDE, we need to figure out on how to move the whole Linux
desktop platform forward. I suspect if we hire a bunch of
upstream developers they will be across both GNOME and KDE.
I think the Apple guys have a very good point when they say
we should let designers lead the definition of the user
    experience.
    -----
But I see the lack of consistency as both a weakness (GNOME,
OpenOffice and Firefox all have different UI toolkits, and
it¹s very difficult to make them seamless) and as a strength
    - people are free to innovate, and the results are
    world-leading.
    -----

  Jim Zemlin:
    -----
Yeah, their stuff's pretty good. [points at a MacBook Air]
That's a pretty sweet laptop there. That's the difference. I
get asked a lot, "Why does Apple get a bye?" from the open
source guys. When you're downstairs I'm sure you'll see a lot
more Macs. The reason why they get a bit more of a bye is
because the stuff is really innovative. It's not the stuff
where you say "Not only is it crap but..."
    -----
I'll tell you who's great with the desktop market, it's those
guys, Apple, with I think more than 20 per cent share. But if
you look at things like the Kindle Fire, Android, the
ChromeBook, at all the alternative means of accessing what's
important and what you probably spend 90 per cent of your
time doing, accessing the internet through a web browser,
then I think there's plenty of room for a Linux desktop
    there.
    -----
    | What's one application would you like to see for Linux
    | that doesn't exist currently?
    iTunes. And Microsoft Office.
    -----
Open source is a development methodology, and choice is not
    guaranteed by a development methodology."
    -----
One of the big things that's difficult is consistency, and
    that's Window's biggest strength.
    -----
This certification lab will increase the number of Linux
applications and ensure that Linux does not fragment.
    -----
As the standards are provided and then adopted, the Linux
desktop will snowball. Microsoft can compete with a Sun, a
Red Hat or a Novell, but they won't be able to compete with
    an ecosystem of Linux desktops...
    -----
What our standards will do is enable desktop application
vendors to easily target the Linux ecosystem, not just a
single vendor, to make sure they run across all the different
    distributions...
    -----
[The new LSB desktop group will be dealing with more than
just KDE and GNOME issues though. It will be dealing with]
all issues dealing with interoperability, ... everyone at the
table, and motivated to make the Linux desktop a success,
everyone will be seeking a consensus. This may not [mean]
making developers choose between KDE and GNOME, but instead
finding a way to make it easier for ISVs to create

Since when is this cheap gossip monger considered a "big name?"

OK, so you have no idea who Mark Shuttleworth is or why he is a big name in

Shuttleworth is the man behind Ubuntu. Curious of your views on his quotes
and the others I provided:

    -----

This may not [mean]
making developers choose between KDE and GNOME, but instead
finding a way to make it easier for ISVs to create
applications that can easily work with both.

Sorry, I am not concerned with out-of-context quips by personages that

But Linus is certainly a man after my own heart. I recall that recently
he railed against the notion of a "virtual machine" stating that real
men prefer real hardware.

Oh yes! I am truly sickened by these aficionados of all things
virtual, from machines to containers. Although I suppose that virtual
machines have their uses they simply grate at my soul. I would not even
consider doing anything virtual.

I have cut my teeth on assembly language. Once that fundamental stuff

Comes down to I am correct - most of those comments from big names in Linux

Virtual machines can be great tools... but don't use them if you do not

It is relevant because the whole fscking world seemed to have fallen
madly in love with Object Oriented programming, and I happen to despise
OO with a raging passion.

I have examined the issue deeply, and I can only conclude that OO
is so fscking popular because people no longer can comprehend
hardware. They are lost in the fogs of lofty OO abstractions and
cannot perceive the machine.

But for me it is quite different. I BEGAN with hardware and assembly
language. I BEGAN with an intimate involvement with hardware. As
a result I can see nothing but the machine. Oh yes, I can understand
all the abstractions but, for me, such abstractions quickly fade into
nothing against the blazing image of the machine.

When I encounter high level code of any kind, my mind cannot help
but to plunge immediately down into the assembly code that underlies
it all. Thus, as a consequence, I do not not especially favor
the creation of ever higher abstractions that serve only to
obliterate and not truly enlighten.

It is, I suppose a sickness, but it is a sickness from which no
escape, or cure, is possible.

The topic had nothing to do with programming.

Why do you use assembly and not machine code? You are using an abstraction,
too.

I do not deny your lack of understanding of the value of higher level
languages and the benefits they offer.

No, it is not an abstraction. Assembly code is a MNEMONIC, in the
same way that a web address is a MNEMONIC for IPv4 dotted quad notation
(i.e. xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx).

Actually I do, or did, use machine code, if machine code is meant
to be the actual binary numeric vales used to indicate instructions
to the processor.

Using machine code can be a fun experience, because the actual binary
values have regular patterns within instruction families. Once these
pattens are recognized, it becomes easy to rapidly plug those values
into memory.

With practice, writing assembly code can be a very fast process,
and also even MUCH EASIER than crafting high level code. This
is because there are no crazy syntax issues to deal with or
remember.

No. It is actually a strength.

But the world fails to recognize it as such.

Such misapprehension has occurred throughout human history.
