For once Boinker, you, I and Rolf are in perfect agreement. Of course,
the agreement would be more prefect from my point of view if you added
yourself to the list.

If you did you would realize that in the so-called West, for the past 2000 years, the vast majority of the human population was forcibly kept in a state of ignorance by the dictates of the Christian religion. Thus was justified the exploitation of the mass of peasantry by the nobles and priests. Without even being aware of it, you are advocating a continuation of that exploitative tradition. No, Oddball, the computer must serve man and not vice versa. However, the philosophy of enforcing ignorance among digital users, which you certainly espouse, is leading inevitably to a situation of where man is becoming subservient to the machine. Witness Microsoft 10. Of course you will deny this. You will continue to blow forth your argument that humans cannot do everything. You will deny and condemn slavery but your actions will give support to it.

It does, especially when it is used as an appliance. If I have to know the details of how a thermostat works and how the circuitry in a furnace works, in order to get a comfort level in my shop, then I have become a slave to the technology. The technology is supposed to be assistive and INVISIBLE, ideally where I don't have to know anything about how it works, as long as it does what I need it to do. Forcing me to acquire expertise in how it works to make it work for me is PRECISELY the enslavement I wish to avoid. You, on the other hand, feel you have to know the ins and outs of your computer, how it does what it does, what you can make it do if pressed. It is not an appliance for you. It is a considerable suck on your time and effort. > > However, the philosophy of enforcing ignorance among digital users, > which you certainly espouse, is leading inevitably to a situation > of where man is becoming subservient to the machine. Humans delegate. It is not efficient either for the individual or for society for everyone to attempt expertise in everything. It is counterproductive and a monstrous waste of effort. In first world countries, the per capita rate for doctors is between 2 and 4 per THOUSAND. There is absolutely no reason for more doctors or people with medical expertise. It would be a waste of time. Likewise, the number of people with programming skill should be confined to a pretty small per capita rate, because it is a waste to have more. This is not slavery. This is delegation and optimization of effort, and it is a GOOD thing to do. -- Odd Bodkin --- maker of fine toys, tools, tables

I mean, no one seems to be accountable. > Ironically, in the early days of personal computing, this was a matter of intense debate. There was one school of thought that said, information needs to be public and accessible by all, and that this core value immediately dismisses privacy as a concern. In early time-sharing systems, there was even a question about whether accounts should have login credentials with passwords, and it was only after considerable anguish that one sys administrator/coder decided that passwords would be required -- almost a historical accident. Even before HTML and the WWW, there were lots of consultative groups advising people like Sun, Apple, and Microsoft about security. Microsoft famously dismissed the concerns of these groups, saying that their users had no interest in security and did not want Microsoft investing in that effort. Others, or course, took a different approach. But really where things started to take off was the internet as a business. Here, the question is, how do I make money as a business? One model is subscription fees. Yahoo and Google took a radically different approach: advertising. Advertising requires targeting to be cost effective, which means knowing your targets really well. So, when valuable services were offered to consumers for free, well, it was pretty obvious that what they were paying with was information about themselves. Anybody with a brain would be able to figure that out. -- Odd Bodkin --- maker of fine toys, tools, tables

The farce is exposed and now much retrofitting must be accomplished to keep out the bad guys. The Internet had been designed on an unrealistic principle of openness and trust. The farce is now exposed. It should be completely rebuilt from scratch.

You, like most of the posters on this and other groups, have concentrated too much on STEM to the exclusion of all else. In German, you would be termed a "Fachidiot." Flatly disagree, as I have stated. Tools are made to adapt to need and value is assigned by consumer usage. The VALUE of personal computers today is as an appliance, regardless of what you think the intent of computers is. > > >> >> This is not slavery. Architects, engineers, plumbers, electricians, HVAC designers and installers, lawyers, doctors, dentists, chiropractors, hair salon workers, commercial kitchen chefs, school teachers, child care workers, nursing home workers, veterinarians, airplane pilots, truck drivers, crane operators, police officers, fire fighters --- NONE of these people can practice their trade without earning a license and being able to produce a maintained certificate of license. There is a reason for this. You may consider it slavery. But that is the social norm in existence, done on purpose. If you're not aware of it, then I'd say you're a little out of touch. -- Odd Bodkin --- maker of fine toys, tools, tables
