There simply is no way for humans to understand the curvature of space or any other higher-dimensional object intuitively because they cannot perceive that. But one can use the abstraction of a two-dimensional surface, an abstraction that works rather well because three-dimensional objects *can* be perceived by humans, and are perceived as arrangements of two-dimensional confining surfaces. And because the same math can be applied. For example, you define a cube by the arrangement of its confining 6 surfaces which need to be squares, and the angle between adjacent surfaces needs to be a right angle (90°).
