Thompson's a writer whose editor rejects a time travel story with this
admonishment:

"Why, the last time I printed a time-traveling story, we
received dozens of protests from readers. No matter how
ingenious be the plot, the old 'grandfather' argument
    invariably whips the author!"

So Thompson sets out to disprove the grandfather paradox.
