I'm still using a beige PowerMac G3 Minitower which, like all Mac
minitowers since then, is very easy to get into (although finding any
upgrades for it can be difficult these days) ... just push the button
on the top down and the entire side of the case comes off, and the top
layer (when on it's side) containing the drive bays is hinged so it can
easily be lifted up to gain access to the motherboard, card slots, etc.

It's not just Mac users ... it's the vast majority of computer users,
no matter whether they are Mac or Windoze users. Most people simply
aren't interested in mucking about inside the computer. They just want
a tool that works. It's the same with a car - most people are not
interested in mucking around in the engine bay and leave that to a
professional mechanic.

The original compact Macs were not user-accessible (partly because the
in-built display could mean a nasty electric shock for anyone not
knowing what they were doing. Some of  the later models which had
separate displays, like the Mac LC series, were easily opened up by
those who wanted to (the LC series is a lot like the old Apple II,
which was also easy to open up and plug stuff into).
