But that's the old ugly desktop box which was mostly empty space inside
... now you've got a good looking all-in-one computer that is crammed
full of bits and pieces.

These days almost none of Apple's devices are user-accessible at all.
The vast majority of users have never wanted or been able to fiddle
about inside their computer anyway - they'll either pay a tech repair
centre to do it or simply buy an newer device. 

The 27" iMac does still has the trap door to let the user change / add
RAM. The cylindrical Mac Pro can be easily opened, but apart from
adding RAM or perhaps swapping the SSD, there's not really anything
else you can do inside that anyway since it can't take standard
graphics cards, etc.

Everything else is fully sealed, often requiring specialised tools and
other equipment for those few who do want to muck about inside their
computer.
