Hi,
Back in December I printed out some Calendars for 2012, I now realise that
the Spring Bank Holiday on the 28th May is wrong, as the HM Gov have put
it back a week to the 4th June due to the Queens Diamond Jubilee
celebrations.
I have entered the correct dates into the RLDlist file for 2012 only
dates, but I can find no means to override the original Date which seems
to be hardwired into the program, it still shows a coloured date even when
the text is removed from the autotext file.
I've tried the latest !Calibre v3.23 and that has the same problem.

Has anyone else come across this, is there a solution, a work around?

TIA

Raymond

What happens if you go into Edit RLDs..., then in the Edit
'permanent' RLD list, click Edit auto RLD text....

In the Edit auto 'permanent' RLD text dialogue which opens, Clear
the entry for Late May PH and leave it blank. Then save new list.

I haven't tried it yet. I will look at it more closely tomorrow if
that doesn't work. It is important that certain 'permanent' RLDs can
be edited or removed for whatever reason.

This i've already tried, as I mentioned in my OP, all that achieves is to
remove the text, but the date is still highlighted RED.

If HM Gov continue to move Bank Holidays around for whatever reason, then
they can no longer be considered as fixed, and the program will need to be
adapted to allow for the situation whenever it arrises.

Can a condition be introduced, similar to that used in !Organizer where a
year suffix is added for the special days that are not required for a
specific year, and the actual date required can be added into the RLDlist
for that specific year, this bit can already be done.

Regards ... Raymond

Sorry - I didn't pay enough attention.

I spent all yesterday afternoon ploughing through the source code -
it's a big program that looks like it has grown a bit like Topsy. The
coding for public holidays is hard wired and buried deep within the
code. It is not a quick fix, because of all the knock-on effects.

I will have a think of how best to try and resolve these problems -
some of which may be one offs (when will we next have the Olympics?).

If anyone has any other comments about Calibre, let me know. I don't
promise to do anything, but you never know, there may be some things
I can fix.

I am not sure the current situation, but in the past, English and
Scottish PHs didn't always coincide (indeed, Edinburgh and Glasgow
had different holidays in spring and autumn). If the present
encumbent in Holyrood (Parliament, not Palace) has his way who knows
what will happen.

Hi Chris,
I've found a solution of sorts, if you go into Edit RLD's towards the top
of this window is the option to un-tick English Public Holidays, doing
this then allows the selection of the three options above ie. New Years
Day, Easter Sunday, and Christmas Day, the rest of the Public Holidays
that have disappeared can then be added with the correct dates to the
RLDlist for the specific year in question.
I don't know if this is mentioned in the user guide/manual, but i've just
tried it and it does work.

Best Wishes
Raymond

It's not just Edinburgh and Glasgow. Most Scottish towns have their own set
of local holidays, which can differ from neighbouring towns only a few miles
away. In Dundee they could differ from those in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and
from those in Fife, just across the river. In Dundee and round about, the
local holiday towards the end of May or the start of June was often called
"Victoria Day" and I think was something to do with that queen's summer
journey to Balmoral.

See http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/publicholidays/ for Dundee 2012!

According to http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/People/bank-holidays/FAQs
there is a set of Scottish bank holidays which are the same across Scotland,
but banks are not actually obliged to shut and since 1996 have harmonised
their closure with English bank holidays!

Local holidays are observed by many businesses and are set by local
authorities. But there's no guarantee that you'd get a local holiday off
work if you work in Scotland: it depends on your employer. So in some
senses, there are no genuine public holidays in Scotland. I worked with
colleagues who could remember long ago when people worked on Christmas Day,
for example.

I think about the only dates you could guarantee wanting to know throughout
Scotland would be those round Easter (though Good Friday was not a holiday in
Dundee generally), Christmas Day and New Year.

I found it was still handy being reminded what the bank holidays were south
of the border, because there was often no point ringing colleagues in England
on bank holidays, even though we were at work.

The Dundee local holidays seemed to apply to schools, and businesses that
chose to observe them. We were never quite sure whether the post offices or
would follow the local holiday or the English bank holiday, but it seems
from the web page just cited that perhaps they were following the Scottish
national bank holidays instead! Sometimes our local holidays in Dundee
coincided with English bank holidays anyway, and when they didn't I never did
a systematic survey to find out what happened!

Edinburgh, too, celebrated Victoria Day - as does Canada. It marks Queen
Victoria's Birthday in may.

OK chaps - we are going rather off topic here. I used to present a
couple of lecture courses on Mondays in the Summer term - lucky to
actually get half the lectures in! I just touched on the chaos of
public holidays and shop holidays north of the border to emphasise
that Calibre must be sufficiently flexible to cope with such things,
if only to switch all inbuilt ones off. I think it does pretty well,
but I will have a look at it over the coming weeks and see whether it
can be improved in any way. You are welcome to send me comments or
suggestions privately.

Of course, the Public Holiday in question has been messed about with
before. It used to be called Whitsun and it was often on about 4th June.
Funny that.

Personally I circumvented the problem by not displaying the 'hard-wired'
Public Holidays and instead put them in my user file (or whatever it is
called).

Why we need two Holidays in May is completely beyond my comprehension
anyway and like Easter and Christmas, any religious associations are
becoming an anachronism in this modern world where perhaps we would
benefit from Public Holidays spread more evenly through the year.

I remember why these get messed about with now: most politicians couldn't
find the nose on their own face. November 5th would be a great public
holiday and a reminder to 600 tossers that they could be sitting on a
bomb so had better behave themselves and do only Good Things.

Didn't someone suggest an extra Bank Holiday for Maggie's birthday? That
would be twice a year I'd want to burn an effigy on a bonfire.
