I found a DVD player in some garbage last year that I figured wasn't
working since the cover was off and looked like someone was trying to
clean the drive. It has an HDMI output, and it did play when I put it
back together, though stopped when I put it on the stack. I havent' got
back to it. My DTV is only 19 or 22 inch and only 2 years old, but it has
analog input still.

I'm sure some of those DVD players I saw at garage sales on Saturday had
hdmi output, I couldn't be bothered looking. I'd planned to get a blu-ray
player back in December, for the output and since blu-ray discs are
starting to appear at garage sales, but I stalled and missed the sales. I
could get one for not much more than my DVD player was back in 2004.
Plus, all the cheap blu-ray players I was looking at could be networked,
one could even do wifi out of the box. Kind of interesting features, I'll
probably get one this December when the pre-Christmas sales kick in.

If some distributions play DVDs and others don't, then I would think
Slackware could do it, you just have to do the work. I thought I could
play DVDs at one point on my old 1GHz computer, but I also remember some
problems like maybe it wasn't fast enough. Out of the box, I couldn't
play MP3s, I had to add something, I can't remember if that's still the
case.

If some distributions can play DVDs, then the issue is getting the stuff
to add to Slackware.
