My parents kept chickens but they'd wrapped up the operation when I was 
very young. They came in handy during the war (II) when you could trade 
eggs for sugar or other rationed items. However they also attracted rats 
and other vermin. My mother had a thing about rats and mice. A family 
legend was the day she saw a rat and blew it away with her shotgun. 
Unfortunately the rat was sitting on a five gallon can of oil, which was 
another rationed item.
