#720385 — Arch Linux

SubjectArch Linux
Message-ID<slrn1185qbc.32h4.ronb02NOSPAM@3020m.home>
After all these years, I finally tried Arch Linux. I'm impressed with it,
fast booting, works well. I didn't install it the "Arch way" — I just used
the Archinstall script they include on the disk. Total time to install,
about 15 minutes. Just walks you through the steps, let's you choose your
desktop (I went with Cinnamon) and you can save your install script for
future installations. (I think I remember that CentOS (before being bought
by Red Hat) doing that back in the day. Of course it was Red Hat feature).

It's a bare bones install, but it didn't take long to learn "sudo pacman
-Suy application" instead of "sudo apt install application." It boots and
shuts down quickly. (Probably because there's not a lot going on in the
background.) It runs cooler than Linux Mint. At first my video wasn't very
good, but I searched Arch's Wiki and found that I needed to install Mesa.
That was easy.

I guess I'll see what's it like on the "cutting edge" for a while. I'm doing
this because the person who made an AppImage for Trelby used Arch, and he's
got a script to do that. I tried unsuccessfully to convert the Arch shell
script into a Debian shell script, so I thought, "why fight it," I'll just
use Arch. But I didn't expect it to be this easy to install. I haven't tried
compiling a Trelby AppImage package yet, but I plan on trying.

At any rate I like Arch Linux. So far it's been easy to work with.

Everything is clear, but one question remain without answer:

Is it Arch cosher?

I don't know. :) I don't know much about Arch, but with the Archinstall
application, they supply, it's pretty easy to install.

I did read a few comments on Reddit that said you wouldn't be regarded as a
"true" Arch user if you used the application that they provide. I never was
much for cliques anyhow.

'I use Arch btw', said with nose elevated in the air. I hacked fastfetch
to show I was a true Arch user and not a EOS wimp.

I used Arch a good part of the day, but I still like Linux Mint as well. I'm
surprised at how easy Arch is to work with. I've been testing a new
Fountain-based screenwriting application that's in beta, and it requires
brand new libraries, not available in Linux Mint (or Debian 13). They're in
Ubuntu 26.04 however. ?? Not sure how that works. The name of that
application is ActOne Screenplay.

I was also testing a new Android writing app called DOSwriter. (That was on
my phone, however.) Pretty impressive features.

But the main reason I installed Arch was to see if create an AppImage for
Trelby with the necessary changes in the Python code so Unicode can be used
for the first time in 16 years of its existence. (Nothing I figured out on
my own, but for some reason the Trelby maintainer hasn't applied these
patches yet (they were available in January) — someone else figured out how
to patch it.

At any rate I'm impressed with Arch. Maybe less so if crashes on me. But,
for now, it's working great.

Really, it's just another distro despite the fanbois. It wasn't a big deal
but 'packman -Syu' was the only outlier in 'zypper update', 'apt update',
and dnf update'. Of them all I prefer dnf. It shows you what it wants to
update and asks if you want to do it rather than the
apt update', 'apt list --upgradeable', 'apt upgrade' dance.

fwiw Ubuntu 26.04 just replace the 7.0.0.29 kernel with 7.0.0.30. It gets
newer stuff than Debian but not quite as new as Fedora. Mint is off
working on Cinnamon/Wayland. Ubuntu 26.04 is a LTS so maybe the next Mint
(24? I lose track) will grab more.

I use aptitude on Debian. It shows all the packages that will be
updated or installed. If there are dependency issues, it shows the
solutions (such as keeping some packages at the same version); you
can step through them and pick the one that's "best".

Debian Sid is at 7.1.7.

I installed it on Ubuntu and it works. I have all the libreoffice stuff on
hold since I don't use it and don't care if it ever updates. aptitude
handles that gracefully unlike the Ubuntu updater that pitches a fit about
packages on hold.

It still seems like more work than the straight cli.

Not sure about that.

Anyway, when I first installed Debian, the package manager was
dselect, which, as I just verified by installing it, was quite a
bit clunkier than aptitude.

    <https://wiki.debian.org/dselect>

I remember an old colatroll of long ago, "Hadron", who claimed
that the various front ends to dpkg were "a clusterfuck of
incompatible installers" or something to that effect.

I use apt as well for upgrades and so forth.
I will use the gui MxLinux package manager when looking for a
new program to install because it's easier to find a particular
package even when I don't know the exact name.
I do notice that there have been a lot of kernel updates
recently.
Not sure what that's all about but I haven't encountered any
issues.
This is my current kernel as of today.

I rarely use the GUI. I tend to install the same applications when setting
up any distro and know them by name. I seldom go shopping for something
new. The thing I like about apt is it works on any Debian adjacent distro
including the Pi without hunting down the GUI for that particular distro.
For example I had to install aptitude on the Ubuntu box to play with it
yesterday. I'd also installed Synaptic on that box since AppCenter sucks
if I do want to shop around.

I didn't go for the ahs kernel in MX. My 4th gen Intel processor on that
box is hardly advanced hardware so it's still 6.12.101. Fedora 44 is
7.1.8. With 45 coming out shortly I don't think they'll go to 7.2 in 44
but I may be wrong.

Basically the same with me. Synaptic is only used when I'm searching for
something that I can't quite remember. I think I've used the Software
Manager in Linux Mint about two or three times. Sometimes I'll look for a
specific Flatpak in Software Manager, but then I'll install it with "flatpak
install."

I've just been letting my Update Manager upgrade the kernels, but I'm using
LM 21.3 and 22.2, so the kernels are sticking at 5.15 and 6.8. My equipment is
older and it works fine (though I did update the kernel to 6.8 on this 21.3
computer -- to support a Keychron keyboard, only to downgrade back to 5.15
when I found the newest 5.15 point release had Keychron support "baked in").
Now I'm back to letting it update the kernel when it wants to.

I like Synaptic. My versions of Linux Mint still use the Quick Filter
(xapian-index) to find applications (much better than the normal search
option). For some reason Synaptic isn't loaded by default in Linux Mint any
more and the xapian-index has had to be installed "by hand" for a while now.
I don't think "xapian-index" is supported any more. So that's partly why
I'll stick with 22.x until its EOL in April, 2029. Although the Debian
developers are supposedly planning on baking something like xapian-index in
Synaptic in the future. (Might already be in Sid, I don't know.)

Linux Mint 23 is supposed to come out in December. It will be based on
Ubuntu 26.04. It looks like there will no longer be small number (point)
upgrades, they'll just update the libraries and applications without
changing to 23.0 through 23.3, as they've done in the past. I don't know for
sure if the final decision has been made on this or not. I'm not that crazy
about the idea as sometimes newer libraries kill old applications. As it
stands now, if you know a newer upgrade will cause an application not to
work, or that a particular application has been removed in the newer
upgrade, you can stick with the older point release (22.2 for example, still
has the older Cinnamon Menu, 22.3 went to the newer one). I can see where
it's easier to not support four point releases with each major release, but
I liked it that way.

As for Arch, "pacman -Syu" seems kind clunky. I didn't run Suse long enough
to remember if zypper works like Debian or Fedora, but you're right about
"apt update," it seems kind of odd to have to run "apt upgrade" separately
-- although I think you can write a small shell script to do it all at once
"sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y". (I guess instead of a shell script
you can make an "alias" to do the same thing, which I've never done.) I
don't have a shell script for updates either. I'm used to the way it is. I
hardly ever run "apt list --upgradable" I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea to
do that.

I installed EndeavourOS, which is Arch Without Tears. I've done all the
low level stuff the Arch purists want you to do decades ago and don't need
a refresher. Endeavor throws in a couple of nice tools like 'yay' to deal
with AUR. Otherwise it's Arch. I went with KDE.

I liked it. I mean it was KDE although I also installed sway as an
alternate. It was a tossup of which had more frequent updates, Arch or
Fedora.

And therein lies the rub. After one update it wouldn't boot. I tried the
usual techniques to fix it but wasn't successful. I didn't have
irreplaceable data so eventually I installed SUSE Leap 16, again KDE. I
figured having at least one box with a staid, trailing edge distro wasn't
a bad idea.

Leap seems to have some oddity with VS Code and extensions. 1.127 works
fine but some of the extensions I use crash on 1.133. No big deal. I
locked code so it doesn't update. Most of the updates are AI slop anyway.

Good luck!

Micro$lop tools are only for brainless lamers. So you should keep claim
if you are so lame so unable write own programmer editor.

NOTE: All IDE are evil corpo bloatware. Normal programmer use own
programmer editor and start GDB TUI external debug session with key
shortcut. Ask ChatGDB for details (also evil and malicious AI from
Micro$lop and next candidate to drop from every day tool).

NOTE: GDB TUI force programmer to make many neurotic clicks, but it is
up to your wisdom to use other smart debug techniques in order to
minimise use GDB TUI. Yes! Programmer is somebody who must be smarter
than evil government, evil corpos, evil banks (they feed FOSS
mercenaries) and evil chicks. Such man save his mind in high condition
and gain true wisdom. So he will be productive during his entire life
and will be rewarded on the final court.
But if he will use madware from Micro$lop and similar, then he can lost
his mid and lost his code and productivity, and he convert himself to
parasite, then he will be punished on the final court.

It is not flame, not personal attack, it is "a buddy-to-buddy reprimand".

The thrill of writing an editor wore off for me back in the CP/M days. The
CP/M portable (sort of) that I bought bundled WordStar so I used that. It
also had vi (NOT vim) which sucked. I did switch to Vim but that was about
a decade in the future.

Buddy to buddy, if you want to live in 1980, go for it. I'll use VS Code,
with the Vim extension of course.
