I was ~52 when I started to have problems. They heal slowly, that's for sure. I have full range of movement back in both shoulders, but it took about 2 years. My dentist had his arm in a sling during one of my visits - he had surgery for a torn rotator cuff. I asked how and he said he didn't know, but he had been doing some gardening. heh! Have you been doing any gardening lately?

Most people confine to those... if he's having issues with them I'd recommend learning to play guitar, which can be done away from 'the gym' (where you're more likely to 'be a man' and hurt yourself). Start with a lightweight model, swamp ash or similar and, say, a 5 watt amp, slowly working your way up to 100 watt models... and don't even think about an effects rack until you get in a band and score a few gigs ;)

Should switch up and do a Jimi. And if somebody wants to give you a Les Paul, just say no. (Or yes, if you have a chair).

I've never owned a Gibson Les Paul ( I have other Gibbies) but I did once have an Ibanez copy that they were sued over, it was a great axe. Closest thing, weight-wise, is probably my Yamaha SBG-3000, which is around 9 or 10 lbs., I think. I don't know if my pain is guitar related but I've heard a lot of people have had issues. When standing I wear it *really* high so maybe that has helped. When sitting I try not to slouch, keeping my chest as far forward as is comfortable. Any kind of repetitive thing can be an issue, really. I don't gig anymore so I don't really practice or even play all that much... but I have been working on pick slanting, a thing I've never bothered with but is actually pretty amazing. I've mainly relied on economy picking (fast), bouncing (slower) and sweeping in a Frank Gambale fashion. I don't see how guys like Jimmy Page wear their guitar as low as they do and not end up with permanent damage.

As such, last year's modest lifting routine was only bench press, military press, lat pulldowns, and lat rows. I know that doing squats and such are probably the best of them all, but I'm not going to do those, for several reasons. My legs and overall core strength are pretty good, from running. -- "Many claim, for example, that I have lied... but *none* can find any example of this. Really, though, if you can get in the gym and do any of these basics, you'll get results. If you have to narrow it down to one or two, deadlifts and overhead press would be my picks.

I mean, by definition, weight-training means pushing your body to its limits, right? The deadlift is the one exercise that I would *never* attempt. I value my back too much, to take that risk. And to get enough rest between workouts to recover, but not so much that you're starting from scratch the next time. Try to hit it three or four times a week, with rest days between each workout. But don't rest more than about three days between workouts. Do three to five sets of five to seven reps. If you can do ten reps with a given weight, it's time to add a plate and drop the reps. Ease into it, and give it time. Three months is not enough. Pain that's not from an injury is probably just DOMs, and that's normal, but it can be erased by a frequency adjustment. I only ever get sore if I wait too long between workouts. Pain from an injury is a different thing, and you need to let it rest. I've had to lay off pullups for about six months now because of a injury somewhere deep in my left elbow area. I substituted wide-grip lat pulls with lighter weight. >>> I know that doing squats and such are probably the best of them all, >>> but I'm not going to do those, for several reasons. The lower back is not at risk unless you are attempting a weight that's too heavy and your back starts to round. The main thing to worry about with deadlifts is tearing a bicep because you forget to keep your arms out of the exercise. There are some good videos showing proper form on youtube. The main idea is to keep your back straight (meaning in its natural alignment) and keep the weight close to your body. Let it ride up your shins in a straight line as you push with your legs. In general, the standard deadlift is a safe. And it's a hell of a near total body exercise.
