What do I have to install at my house so that we will be able to use this? I wish to avoid using our electrical service at all costs, if possible." Of course the serious answer to your question has to do with what she wants to use the iPad for. I use mine quite extensively and virtually never connect it to my computer. Many files on my iPad come to me direct from the internet. When I need to move a written document from computer to iPad, I use Dropbox. But by ruling out using iTunes, you are eliminating the most sensible way to move audio files that you may have on your computer to your iPad, and similarly for certain kinds of video files. If, like me, that isn't a priority, then you may be just fine without connecting to iTunes. Again, the serious answer has to take into account what use she plans to make of the iPad.

It shows that there are strongly held views about iTunes out there. It was not my purpose to create an argument. After my experience with iTunes I do not want to have anything to do with it. That's a strongly held view, I admit. I rather like the apple products and their laptops in particular but they are in a higher price bracket than I wish to go. The second reason that I do not want to put iTunes on my wife's laptop is that she has some embroidery software in it for her embroidery sewing machine and I do not want iTunes messing about with that. I know that it should not but I am not prepared to take the risk. Apple needs to get its act together and produce something better than iTunes !!!!!!!. A number of suggestions made here re using Dropbox -- I will go in this direction I think as I use Dropbox on my own computers and it is a good product. Thank you one and all for your input and suggestions. -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Maurice Helwig ~~~~~~~~~~~~

Maurice Helwig: > After my experience with iTunes I do not want to have anything to do > with it. That's a strongly held view, I admit. Android. Forget Apple. Get your wife an Android. People talk about how one can use iOS devices without iTunes. It isn't /really/ possible to get anything approaching full use of the device without iTunes. It would be an impoverished experience. > The second reason that I do not want to put iTunes on my wife's laptop > is that she has some embroidery software in it for her embroidery sewing > machine and I do not want iTunes messing about with that. Frankly, you might need to get your act together and learn how to use iTunes. I have a five-year-old neighbor who successfully uses iTunes with an iPad on Windoze. I'm sure that, for a suitable fee, she would be willing to teach you. > Thank you one and all for your input and suggestions. You're welcome. I have nothing _against_ using iTunes - it just doesn't come up in the uses I make of my iPad. What are those? -answering email -checking calendar -browsing the web -reading the New Yorker -reading books through the Amazon app -listening to podcasts through Downcast -doign NYT crossword puzzle -streaming video from Netflix and other places -writing notes in the Notes app. -taking notes in meetings in uPad. -culling photos imported from my camera. There are a bunch of other things I do more rarely, but the activities above are things I do on a daily basis more or less, and don't involve any iTunes interactions.

This is important to me. Sure.. I'm not asserting no one needs iTunes, nor that it is useless. But your claim that one can only have a crippled user experience without iTunes is wrong. It simply depends on your usage patterns. For exampke, I have little to back up. My email is on a server. My calendar is on Google. My contacts are on iCloud, etc. And of course one can back up lots to iCloud. I'm sure my situation isn't universal, but it is common. Several of the other things you mention (stuff from the iTunes store) can be done without interacting with iTunes on the Desktop (the OPs objection). I don't know about Aperture since I don't have it, but for many users, the other four can be done without Desktop iTunes. So again, I'm not telling you what to do. I just disagree with your assertion that the iPad experience without iTunes is "impoverished." > Chacun à son goût. Oui. Though you didn't write before as if you meant that.

It simply depends on your usage patterns. if you do absolutely nothing with the ipad, then you don't need itunes *or* the ipad. most people will find the lack of itunes to be an issue, since there's a lot that can't be done without it, including what's listed above, plus a *lot* more. > For exampke, I have little to back up. I just disagree with your > assertion that the iPad experience without iTunes is "impoverished." it is definitely more limiting. that might not matter to you personally but it does matter to most users, since most users use itunes with their devices.

Actually, most of what is listed above can be done without iTunes. In particular, music, video from the store (which is what was above), and backing up. Aperture, I don't know about. I do wonder about anything you say for "most people" since previous experience suggests that you use that as a substitute for "I don't know what I'm talking about."l > > For exampke, I have little to back up. Yes, that was what he mentioned: music from the store. Music from your own computer generally requires using iTunes. > it's also a *lot* easier to manage music in itunes than on the device > itself, such as creating playlists, particularly smart playlists. That's true. So if listening to music you keep on your computer happens to be a big iPad use for you, then you'll want to be using iTunes on your computer to move it there. I don't use my iPad as a music listening device. If I'm doing earbuds, I use my iPhone, and if I'm doing speakers, I use something with real speakers. People I know who have iPads do the same as me. I'm sure there are people who _do_ listen to music on their iPads, but there are plenty who do not. > > I don't know about Aperture since I don't have it, but for many users, > > the other four can be done without Desktop iTunes. > > nope. the other four require itunes. What were those other things again? Buying music from iTunes store (doesn't require desktop iTunes). Buying videos from iTunes store (doesn't require desktop iTunes). Backing up? Doesn't require iTunes. Just photos. Like I said. Yes, not using iTunes _may_ be limiting for your iPad use. But it depends how you are using your iPad. I'm sure there are people who use their iPads to play music a lot, or to watch non-streaming video. I don't, and neither do the people around me.

With more recent versions Apple has actually changed this so that a computer (and hence iTunes) is no longer a necessity ... but it can still be useful and can depend (as you said) on what you want to use the iPad for.

Outside of iTunes? Such as? -- I don't approve of political jokes... I've seen too many of them get elected.

Such as? The file browsers can obviously be used to backup to your computer, or there are external wi-fi based hard drives you can transfer data to. If you have already used jailbreak (unnecessarily just for this use) there are likely to be more options as well.

You can say yes or no to this option. > Apple needs to get its act together and produce something better than > iTunes !!!!!!!. The evidence suggests you are wrong. While iTunes has its flaws, it works just fine for the vast majority of iPhone and iPad users. And if one judges by sales, it doesn't seem to be discouraging sales. > A number of suggestions made here re using Dropbox -- I will go in > this direction I think as I use Dropbox on my own computers and it is > a good product. Dropbox is just fine. I would not count on it getting music and videos onto the iPad in an easy way, but if you don't need that, then you're OK. As I and others wrote before, whether and how much you need to use iTunes depends completely on what you are using the iPad for.

Because Windoze is so friggin BUGGY and has to be patched continuously does in NO way correlate with Mac software. You do realize that since Micro$oft is discontinuing support for XP and will not patch that POS anymore, 95%+ of ATMs using it will be vulnerable to hacking after this year, unless the update to another buggy soon-to-be-hacked MS OS? BTW: You might want to look up "BOX Sync", it is much like Dropbox, and thru 02/15/14 you can get 50GB storage free by signing up and downloading the App. "Google" it... > Thank you one and all for your input and suggestions. No. Thank YOU for coming out of your shell of fear and trusting Apple products, please. The cost of security and peace of mind really isn't that much, you know?

That's a strongly held view, I admit. and one that's entirely baseless. you have yet to give a valid reason why you hate it, other than you had troubles removing it. removing software is not a reason to dislike something. a lot of software is hard to remove, and not just to annoy users. there is almost always a good reason for having multiple components. itunes could not do what it does as seamlessly as it does it without those components, and some of them have benefits outside of itunes (e.g., quicktime & bonjour). what matters is what the software does when it's being used, not what happens when you want to remove it. plus, i doubt you even used it at all. as i recall you said you were asked to remove it for someone else. you also more than likely didn't remove it properly. apple outlines exactly how. > I rather like the apple products and their laptops in particular but > they are in a higher price bracket than I wish to go. prices for macs are similar for similar spec hardware. what apple doesn't do is make bottom tier products, the $299 netbooks and the like. the reason those are so cheap is they have lesser specs (often significantly so) and don't do a whole lot, not because of any mythical apple tax. much of the time, you have to add a lot of stuff (more memory, faster processor, additional software, etc.) to make it useful, so it's not nearly as cheap as it seems. > The second reason that I do not want to put iTunes on my wife's laptop > is that she has some embroidery software in it for her embroidery sewing > machine and I do not want iTunes messing about with that. I know that it > should not but I am not prepared to take the risk. why in the world would itunes mess with embroidery software??? now you're just making up nonsensical reasons to dislike it. not only does itunes not mess with anything, but it certainly won't mess with something entirely unrelated even if you wanted it to. > Apple needs to get its act together and produce something better than > iTunes !!!!!!!. why? millions of users don't find itunes to be a problem. it's not perfect (nothing is), but it is a lot better than manually maintaining a file/folder hierarchy, which not only is a pain in the ass, but very limiting. there will always be a few who dislike something no matter what it is, and they tend to be very vocal about it. not surprisingly, they never actually say *why* they hate it, or they come up with some ridiculous reason, as you did above. > A number of suggestions made here re using Dropbox -- I will go in this > direction I think as I use Dropbox on my own computers and it is a good > product. it is a very good product, but it can't do all of what itunes can do. *both* are useful, and for different purposes. for instance, without itunes, you won't be able to sync music so that the built in music and video players will play it, thereby drastically limiting your options. you won't have any playlists, smart or otherwise. rearranging apps is a lot easier in itunes than on a device (even with the idiotic new way in ios 7). large files will take a really long time to transfer versus usb. you won't be able to make a full backup or restore from it, nor will you be able to recover a device that for some reason, has a problem with an over the air update.

Wait - you, nospam, are asking people for valid reasons? ...does not compute...
