"My wife wants to purchase an electric lawnmower.

What do I have to install at my house so that we will be able to use
this?

I wish to avoid using our electrical service at all costs, if
possible."

Of course the serious answer to your question has to do with what she
wants to use the iPad for. I use mine quite extensively and virtually
never connect it to my computer. Many files on my iPad come to me
direct from the internet. When I need to move a written document from
computer to iPad, I use Dropbox.

But by ruling out using iTunes, you are eliminating the most sensible
way to move audio files that you may have on your computer to your
iPad, and similarly for certain kinds of video files. If, like me,
that isn't a priority, then you may be just fine without connecting to
iTunes.

Again, the serious answer has to take into account what use she plans
to make of the iPad.
