Troll is an interesting word. I see lots of gripes about certain posters
by other posters. And then there are the counter gripes going right
back. Each of course calls the other a troll. So will the real troll
please stand up. Hmmm, I don't see anyone standing.

Wikipedia says a troll is a person who starts flame wars or
intentionally upsets people on the Internet by posting inflammatory and
digressive, extraneous, or off-topic messages.

Did that definition really say trolls post off-topic messages? And this
is an Android newsgroup? Oh my.

Bottom line (my guess). Many people who filter likely filter those that
they just don't like. Or perhaps more likely just say they filter them
and still sneak a peek since they often are soon caught posting to or
about the so called filtered troll.

I don't have any trouble remembering those I don't like so it would be
pretty easy to just not open them. But where's the fun in that. It's
kinda like reading only the good parts of a newspaper.

And using a TB newsreader makes it very easy to do that if one wanted
to. However as I said several 100 words up, YMMV.

BTW it is difficult to do that using the Groundhog (Android) newsreader.
Does that sentence now make my post on-topic? Whew.

Let's say I were interested in joining this ski group today. I could
open it up in my newsreader, and see a lot of traffic and think "Oh,
active, nice!" And then I could start reading and realize there is very
little (if any) actual traffic.

The easiest thing to do at that point is unsubscribe, because it's a
toxic place. That's the reality of it and how newsgroups die from lack
of new blood.

It's not helped by different newsreaders offering different
sophistication levels of filtering. I can easily block all of "The
Doctor"'s posts in comp.* because he posts with a unique domain for his
message IDs. So junking those and any replies to those is simple in the
software I use. It's not easy to block just a selection of replies to
people posting from Google Groups, but I can block the original posters
when they rise to my attention.

You know what's easiest? Unsubscribe. When you find a place that bad, you
never know how know how much work it will be to identify the bad actors
and learn if they nymshift or the like.

> One thing I also find entertaining are the 'I'm gonna filter you'

It sends signals to others which might or might not be useful. I know
B1ackwater in comp.os.linux.misc has been named as someone people are
starting to plonk. I have not done that myself, but I see the messages
and know people who pay better attention to names than I do have started
to consider those posts trollish. (I'm still thinking "naive".)

> I actually enjoy the drama. Usenet is so human. YMMV. Carry on...

I hear there is a skiing group you may enjoy.

I, personally, have been making an effort in sci.electronics.design.
There's a lot of traffic there, from a lot of people. A large number
of them seem to think political topics are on topic. But it's not been
a lot of fun building that killfile and I feel like I need to update it
at least weekly.

160 Subject header kill entries (to match threads or words)
9 From header kill entries (to nuke the most noisesome posters)
3 References header kill entries (to get followups to above)
1 Xref header kill entry (to catch crossposts)

I have a much smaller killfile for rec.crafts.metalworking, but the
terrible posters there (are|were) much more likely to crosspost:

70 Subject header kill entries (to match threads or words)
10 Xref header kill entry (to catch crossposts)
6 From header kill entries (to nuke the most noisesome posters)

I haven't needed to update that one in a while.

So far I've only unsubscribed because a newsgroup went dead. I'd much
rather have the NG alive even with some OT and/or trollish stuff.
BTW the best way to stop a perceived troll is for everyone
ignore him. But of course they never do (or can't).

Yep. I chuckle at folks broadcasting their plonks. Then of course a few
days later they're back commenting on the perceived troll's posts.

No point, in many groups, as nearly everyone that had real content to
post has left. There are some ba. groups like that. But amusingly, if
you go look at those groups, there are still one or two people endlessly
posting bizarre stuff, and thousands of posts, even though everyone else
left years ago <https://groups.google.com/g/ba.broadcast>.

That happens.

There is one group I added recently, rec.arts.tv, where they supposedly
would talk about TV programs, but most of it is about USA-ian politics.
I have some filter rules that remove a lot of it, but the first thing I
do when I open it is manually kill many threads, so that the usable one
remains. And on those, there is still content about TV :-)

Sure, EVERYBODY knows that. I killed 2Buddha, but Horvie occasionally
says something clever. Some things have sentimental value far beyond
any hope of actual utility.

I mark most of the traffic in this group as 'read' without even looking
at it. There's so much noise finding signal is difficult.

> They didn't disappear. You chose to cease subscribing to them,

It doesn't matter if I stay subscribed, when everyone else has left, the
group effectively disappears. I remember when r.h.o.d was a good social
group. Now if I post and get a reply the same calendar year it's
noteworthy.

Look at comp.unix.aux. Whole years go by without posts. There are two
posts from November 2020 on my server, one of which was a follow-up to
a post from March 2019. A/UX was my first Unix, and comp.unix.aux
posts by Alexis Rosen is how I found my ISP: Panix was A/UX based in
the earlier 1990s. I'm still using Panix for mail and news via ssh
shell account 20+ years later.

Look at alt.sex.*. Spammed worse than any of the big-8 groups were, now
so dead. There was a soc.sexuality.general moderated group to replace
all that mess, I can't recall the last time someone posted there. I
don't think there were any in 2020 or 2019. So it sits quiet, dormant in
my .newsrc.

These are Darwinistic processes. You can't change that without clear

A lot of groups lasted for a long time. Some are still alive -- mostly
those providing some sort of technical discussion/support.

Likewise. Maybe it will even happen!

I don't think that's the problem. Usenet has existed for a
very long time. I still go to computer-related groups. It's
just people discussing. They do't need to be policed like
children.

  What's changed is the shift from citizen to consumer;
in the wider culture, generally, and as a profit strategy
in computing. People don't feel like citizens online. And
increasingly people are simply not raised to be considerate
adults.

I go to Reddit for discussions I'm interested in. Not because
I like it but because it's busy. Why is it so busy? Because
people can up-vote and down-vote and win little cartoon
awards to festoon their posts. People can cry to
the moderators if they feel insulted. People can generally
be self-indulgent while being protected by the confines
of the playpen. It's not an adult discussion for most
of them. It's a child's gossip circle, where millennials and
gen-Zers talk about feeling "safe" in a "safe space", and
enact what they imagine community might be, had they
ever experienced anything like community.

Compared to that, Usenet feels like crawling out of your
crib without a helmet. Too dangerous. And you don't get
any points for it!

I had thought that about this group. Easy enough to recognize the crap
and ignore it, but apparently some people find that difficult. I
confess I participated with gusto in a flame war long ago, but I grew
out of it.

Otherwise known as "dumbing down". According to common knowledge now,
it's probably Trump's fault.

I wonder if there's an abrupt age cutoff. My daughter says that my
education was better than hers, which was in turn better than HER
children's. All California public schools, and her children lived in a
far more affluent community than mine or hers. I blame the unions for
this. For real.

I do miss the happy-face stickers, though...

Yes, it would be nice, wouldn't it? I spend more time on reddit these days
as the SNR is far, far higher. The content is very similar if you can find
a suitable subreddit/group.

I've looked at reddit. Too much white space. Fora suck.

It's not a forum. The mobile app has very little white space. But it's
balance between managing trolls and the user experience. I find reddit is
better. YMMV.

Attempting to read 'news' on a phone or tablet (even email is only just
bearable) seems unpleasant. "Text-heavy" seems like the only sane way
to do it.

My son likes it. I tried it. Painful.

Reddit, for all of its faults, is quite useful due to the moderation
which is gentle in some respects and strict in others.

Howard Forums has become useless. You have people with specific agendas
acting as moderators. If someone posts something that a cheerleader
doesn't like they get banned, either temporarily or permanently, and
have to create a new account with a different name if they want to
continue to post, but more often they'll just leave.

That said, with some judicious filtering, Usenet still has some useful
content. I have 18 filter rules on comp.mobile.android and could
probably remove most of them since a lot of the problem posters have
left. Really only three or four problem people that post incessantly,
and only one that constantly nym-shifts.

The four filter rules that make this newsgroup useful and readable are:

 From is: jollyroger@pobox.com ("Jolly Roger")
 From is: g.kreme@gmail.com.dontsendmecopies ("Lewis")
 From contains: arlen ("Arlen Holder")
 From is: nospam@nospam.invalid ("nospam")

This is for Thunderbird, I'm sure on Forte Agent, and whatever other
newsreaders are being used, the rules would be similar.

These rules cover the four posters that post the vast majority of the
incorrect information, and are the most obnoxious. Sometimes "Arlen's"
nym shifting requires additional rules. I have some other rules that are
still active but I don't think have any effect any more.

There was a newsgroup reader that downloaded not just the headers, but
the message content as well, so you could filter out posts that were
responses to the trolls' posts, but without filtering out the responder
completely. But it took a lot of time to download the messages and not
just the headers.

Thunderbird can kill all the responses without downloading the full
message. It is called "kill subthread".

I have set up my Thunderbird to not cache contents, because I use an
nntp proxy server that does the caching.

But you often don't want to kill the whole sub-thread. You just want
delete responses to the trolls, not all responses.
