Let's say I were interested in joining this ski group today. I could
open it up in my newsreader, and see a lot of traffic and think "Oh,
active, nice!" And then I could start reading and realize there is very
little (if any) actual traffic.

The easiest thing to do at that point is unsubscribe, because it's a
toxic place. That's the reality of it and how newsgroups die from lack
of new blood.

It's not helped by different newsreaders offering different
sophistication levels of filtering. I can easily block all of "The
Doctor"'s posts in comp.* because he posts with a unique domain for his
message IDs. So junking those and any replies to those is simple in the
software I use. It's not easy to block just a selection of replies to
people posting from Google Groups, but I can block the original posters
when they rise to my attention.

You know what's easiest? Unsubscribe. When you find a place that bad, you
never know how know how much work it will be to identify the bad actors
and learn if they nymshift or the like.

It sends signals to others which might or might not be useful. I know
B1ackwater in comp.os.linux.misc has been named as someone people are
starting to plonk. I have not done that myself, but I see the messages
and know people who pay better attention to names than I do have started
to consider those posts trollish. (I'm still thinking "naive".)

I hear there is a skiing group you may enjoy.

I, personally, have been making an effort in sci.electronics.design.
There's a lot of traffic there, from a lot of people. A large number
of them seem to think political topics are on topic. But it's not been
a lot of fun building that killfile and I feel like I need to update it
at least weekly.

 160    Subject header kill entries (to match threads or words)
   9    From header kill entries (to nuke the most noisesome posters)
   3    References header kill entries (to get followups to above)
   1    Xref header kill entry (to catch crossposts)

I have a much smaller killfile for rec.crafts.metalworking, but the
terrible posters there (are|were) much more likely to crosspost:

  70    Subject header kill entries (to match threads or words)
  10    Xref header kill entry (to catch crossposts)
   6    From header kill entries (to nuke the most noisesome posters)

I haven't needed to update that one in a while.
