Maybe you misunderstand.
That particular app can not be removed, ie, it is on the firmware, which
possibly means it is added by the phone manufacturer under contract from
the phone company. To get upgrades they also need another contract for
the manufacturer to add again that application (updated).
If the phone company does not renew the contract, you do not get the
upgrade that owners of the free version of the same phone do.
Before smartphones the customization came with the SIM, I believe. Oh,
and locking the phone to that or similar branded SIM. But I do not
believe they can add apps on the SIM, do they?
