  Ah, so you're basically saying that your addressbook is a mess and
needs to be cleaned up before you can make your desired short-list!

  As to "people use various formats for their names", make sure that the
name part of the email address is correct and all will be well.

  With "the name part of the email address", I mean for example the
"Frank Slootweg" part in my From: address:

From: Frank Slootweg <this@ddress.is.invalid>

(of course IRL, the "<this@ddress.is.invalid>" part will be a valid
email address)

  TB calls this the 'Display Name'.
  
  If in TB the 'Display Name' is correct, you're all set. If it's not
set, TB will put the 'username' in what it displays in the 'Name' field.

  You can check whether or not 'Display Name' is set, by clicking on an
addressbook entry. If 'Display Name' is set, the bottom pane will show
it. If it's not set, it will only show the email address (user@msp.com).

  Some examples:

Frank Slootweg <frankie@myisp.com> -> 'Name' field says "Frank Slootweg"
<frankie@mymsp.com>		   -> 'Name' field says "frankie"
