I just migrated onto a new PC and sidegraded from Linux Mint 17 Mate to
Linux Mint 19.1 Cinnamon, decided that Cinnamon is a heap of cack and
went back to Mate without any particular problems. I do use Firefox
and Chromium sync, so that was trivial, copied and restored an
Evolution backup, so that was easy, and copied all the non-dot files
from ~ on the old machine to the new one. Other than having to faff
about due to now having a 4K monitor, it was all pretty straightforward.

Although you wouldn't have thought so, judging by the amount of swearing.

About the only outstanding issue is that the 'new' gedit is garbage and
xed seems to have no way to easily add plugins, so I've lost all my
gedit plugins for the time being.

One of the big problems with FOSS seems to be this constant need to
tinker with things that don't need tinkering with, without fixing
fundamentals.
