I use FreeBSD, and I wipe and reinstall on each upgrade (but I leave the 
partition with home directories alone).

After system installation, I restore $HOME for root, and anything 
relevant in /usr/local. Everything seems to work fine and has done for 
years.

I use Xfce and claws-mail (so, sylpheed essentially).
