VAX BASIC wasn't that bad. You could write proper programs in it, as I recall. Hmm, you could also write micro style BASIC with it - when someone investigated why a VAX was providing "lumpy performance", it turned out to be a chap who thought that the way to slow a screen down was to put in a FOR/NEXT loop with a million iterations.
