Hi, all. I'm Alberto e I've more than 20 years of experience with delphi. Now, I'm moving to java, so, I'm searching information for the "right way". My intention, at this moment, is learn how develop and expose web services usable by mobile (ios/android) or windows dekstop application (maybe, linux too but later..) I have seen these links: https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19798-01...boe/index.html https://netbeans.org/kb/docs/websvc/rest.html (i tried, but it doesn't work for me...) but I have not experience to choose the "right way". So, I would need to know: 1) standard technology to use (REST/RESTful, business interface..or other?) 1) best ide to do it (netbeans, eclipse, jdeveloper...or other?) I apologize about my doubts will be sound like "stupid", but I would start this new "adventure" in right way. Thanks in advanced for any answer. A.

Go for JAX-RS web services. Start with: * Tomcat as server * standard editor for writing the code * ant for build and deployment When you got a feeling for it, then try all the free Java IDE's out there and pick the one you like the most. I have found this tutorial very helpful. http://docs.oracle.com/javaee/6/tutorial/doc/docinfo.html If you are only interested in Web Services then chapter 3 is what you want. Although reading other chapters for background can't hurt.

There is no best way and the right way tends to be personal preference. Is this for one application, or are you trying to learn tech to get a job somewhere? Are you coding by yourself or will you be putting out ads for other developers who already know the tech? It might help to search your area job listings and see what others are using. I haven't searched for a job in a long time but last I checked for Java positions everyone wanted someone who knows web tech and they were using at least 4 different technologies. I hear tomcat is a nice free one, jetty does something along those lines, and big business are using Oracle Java EE.

Tomcat and Jetty are both implementations of Java EE web profile (a subset of Java EE full platform). Arne

As first, thanks for these answers. Eric: I need to move to java about searching job (so, is important for me to learn *most used* technologies/frameworks/ides...) and, for a my project, I need to develop a "system" that: 1) propagate data modification in my customer head office to external database 2) these data will be send to mobile android tablets on demand 3) tablets will send other data to same external database 4) head office read data sent by android tablets 5) tablets and head office need authentication to read/write data to external database (...is so complex to explain why I've this "strange" architecture, but I need it..) So, I'm thinking to use java to develop this system. Maybe is a good opportunity to UNDERSTAND AND LEARN JAVA and say goodbye to delphi. Now, I've netbeans + maven + glassfish and tomcat. I I'm trying to understand using tutorials and other...and I'm very confused. Netbeans has demo projects, and I've found a JAVA7 messagebord application and now I'm using it as a template to understand and learn. I added to this project some persistent class using netbeans wizard "entity classes from database". Ok. Wonderful. After this task, deploy on glassfish fails with an exception....Uff.... Also, I tried this: https://netbeans.org/kb/docs/websvc/rest.html but it doesn't work. If you try to test web services, you don't see anything. I'm studying and learning about this work since 1985. I'm 48..I'm old.. :-((( I've no problem to LEARN. I never had problem to LEARN. I think that about our work we need CONTINUE LEARNING, CONTINUE IMPROVMENT and so on. But I am frustrated because tutorials don't work, blogs speak about java without explain java version/netbeans version, and I don't see A WAY but a lot of different way and no know how to EVALUTATE and choose. REST/REstful, http requests..or...? (..I always hated SOAP...!) :-D JPA, Spring JDBC, Hibernate, Batis.or....? Arne: > many things are personal preferences, but there are also some > some more solid based points. what are they? Nigel: > http://docs.oracle.com/javaee/6/tutorial/doc/docinfo.html Thanks. I hope it will be valid on java7 too.. Also, I bought this book in kindle format: https://www.amazon.it/Restful-Java-Services-Jobinesh-Purushothaman/dp/1784399094/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1471339367&sr=8-2-fkmr0&keywords=resful+java+web+services ..but examples use ORACLE DATABASE....uff...and when i try to use MySql examples don't work..... I'm trying again. Many many thanks to all, guys. A.

I've always been confused myself, there are so many different technologies here that sound like they're doing the same or very similar things. The only point to learning new things is if you have or believe you will have a practical purpose for something the new thing can do that nothing else does (or it can do it much better), or if you're looking for a career with a business that is using the technology. > REST/REstful, http requests..or...? (..I always hated SOAP...!) :-D > JPA, Spring JDBC, Hibernate, Batis.or....? I haven't needed any of these things, aside from your basic http requests, so I don't know what they do that our current technologies don't do. We get one PC to send data to another by starting a JVM on each and connecting them with sockets (we do this on local domain but the same method works over the internet), and we send data to/from tablets using your basic GET/POST commands to a jetty servlet.

The code for the latter may be simpler and easier to maintain if you used JAX-RS instead of plain servlet. Arne

I'll look into it, but we're using a hybrid language so the servlet was easier to set up because the server stuff is built in. http://documentation.basis.com/BASISHelp/WebHelp/servlet/bbj_servlet_overview.htm#

The first link on that page is to how to use RESTEasy with BBj. RESTEasy is a JAX-RS framework! :-) Arne

Oracle Java 7 free went EOL April 2015, but there are still supported versions. Oracle Java 7 paid has premier support until July 2019 and extended support until July 2022. IBM Java 7 for non-z?OS has normal support until September 2019 and either 2 or 3 years of extended support. Redhat Linux OpenJDK 7 has support until June 2018. Arne

All right, substantially obsolete. -- Lew

If you can run the latest, everyone should remain current on Java. Windows is a different story. I run 8.1 at work, 10 at home. I've heard 10 has a lot of issues on a managed domain. We still run XP because software would cost thousands of dollars to run on anything newer.

Many are tied to the version their app server supports. And upgrading app server can sometimes be a project and then both app server and Java becomes a bit old. Arne

The NetBeans based tutorials I worked through required GlassFish. Tomcat didn't work, it doesn't fully support all the frameworks so the tutorial examples which test the web service don't work. I never tried any JAX-RS tutorials because the service I am looking to replace is not RESTful. At the moment I don't know enough to be of much help, other than to recommend that if you want to try the NetBeans tutorials you'll want to use the GlassFish server. And to read everything you can find.

Hi, people. Now, I've a (BETA!) webapp developed using netbeans that: 1) runs on Tomcat 8 2) exposes 3 different servelets with doGet override methods 3) uses a MySql database Also, I've a delphi xe7 application that uses this webapp via HTTP protocol. It sounds like a poor webapp, but I'm a newbie and on september I'll have a demo with a my customer. So, I need something to show. Next, I'll work about secure my webapp (no basic HTTP authentication). I'll "disturb" this ng for other questions. :-D Thanks to all. A.
