Fair comment, though if you're setting up a personal teaching and
development environment for just yourself, the cheapest and most hassle-
free approach may be to invest on a RaspberryPi running Raspbian. Total
cost is under $US 35 for a Pi 3. All the software you'd need is either a
Raspbian package (and so free) or a free download off the 'net.
Additional items needed are:

- an SD card. 8GB is fine but more than 16GB would be overkill.

- a case. Buy one or DIY - mine lives in an octagonal plastic box
that used to hold Mirabell Mozartkugeln.

- cabling etc. including a 2.1A USB mains adapter

- Run it headless from a PC on the same LAN and you don't need any
additional keyboard, mouse or screen. Or, of course, you'll need to add a
  keyboard, mouse and screen.

Quite. A good, correctly configured and tested firewall is an essential
minimum if you don't want to be pwned or find yourself hosting part of a
botnet.
