I'm not clear why. The last CD I bought (other than directly from the
muscians) was DRM protected so it was unpleasant to play in a computers.
The intertrack gaps would produce very annoying squeals, totally
countering the comfort I would get from the music. They literally
sabotaged their own CD.

I seem to recall that like your experience with DRM documents, I ended
up ripping the music off the CD so that I could listen to it on the
computer without interference. Like I said, that was the last CD I
bought in a music store.

I think that happens sometimes but it never got a lot of traction, so
most CD's even nowadays don't have it.

Thanks Cecil,

If I get pissed off enough I will just remove the whole Bookshelf - I have it in different versions anyway. Thanks for making me aware that you have joined the Forth Killer league.

Doesn't seem appropriate. Cecil was not advocating the removal of DRM from
publications; he was merely pointing out how trivial it now is to do so.
When it *is* so trivial to remove the DRM, it does cause one to question
the validity/point of applying DRM in the first place.

I can't imagine the Forth market being large enough to warrant the piracy
of publications, especially when people in the Forth pretty much know each
other. You've been very gracious to the Forth community for producing these
publications and I'm grateful to you. I guess these pirate sites just scrape
everything they can from the web somehow, regardless of popularity. Given
how cheap these Forth publications are, you'd have to be nuts to choose
to get them from a pirate site, with all the security/virus risks that that
entails!

So telling people how to do it. So teaching how to steal. This type of behaviour pisses me off. Such a little market, so only small criminals - or better put: stealing from your friends in the little Forth community or enabling the others to do it.

So, everybody here knows each other - one rips it off and shows the other friends - you might want to go back to how this whole issue started.

You are over reacting and making a fool of yourself. No one is
advocating anything and no one is teaching anything. He simply reported
that he tried it on legally owned pubs and it worked for some.

I am curious. How much money do you think has been lost in the Forth
community due to piracy?

That is not how it would work out if I chose to remove DRM from
my copies of your books:

I bough the second book in your series, but have not yet seen
it. I've thought a few times about installing Amazon software
in order to read it, and decided not to.

Other books in the series do interest me, but there is no
point in buying, because I cannot read them. If I did find
out how to quickly remove the DRM protection, then I would
buy more titles from the series.

I do have one Amazon self-published book but it is on paper,
published via lulu.com. However, they also do eBooks, but no
longer support DRM (AFAICT) [1]

Very informative, thanks. The clear reminders from Apprentice Alf
&co of the acceptable limits of (legal?) usage were noted, but
these do not affect my normal behaviour.

I looked for my copy of "Learning Programming with MyCo:
Learning Programming easily - independent of a PC", gave up, then
looked into my Amazon account.

Because I have not "setup an approved device", this book cannot
be downloaded. Whether my Kobo or older eReader are approved I
do not yet know.

It also cannot be viewed in a browser because "You have selected
content that is not compatible with MR's Kindle Cloud Reader"

To resolve this problem there are two links in this message: "Buy
a compatible device" and "free Kindle reading app".

When selecting either of these I get a page that says: "Looking
for something? We're sorry. The Web address you entered is not a
functioning page on our site."

To be continued... maybe. The Kindle forth books are a simple
and attractive option for many, but may not work for me.

I downloaded the PC version of the Kindle Reader a long time ago and it all worked fine under Windows from then on. amazon actually asks when I buy a new eBook where I want to read it and it is mostly the tablet - but PC is excellent to use, especially if you want to take screen prints of schematics or pictures.

With Forth LITE Tutorial I actually had two windows open while testing: one with the eBook and one with a VFX version - you can read and try at the same time.
The same should work with gforth and others.

Just tried out the cloud reader version
- signed in with my account
- and surprise
- all of the ebooks I ever bought are there and readable.

This is what some want to avoid. Also, I have nowhere I want to

I opened a cloud account with Amazon, but had to agree to pay
them £55 in June, then transferred your book into it. So now I
can read it until later today when I cancel the cloud account.

This is still not the way I would access a book. I paid an extra
£0.89 over the Kindle price to get the self published[1] "Toxic
Teeth"[2] on paper. Although I would prefer electronic copy, the
Kindle route is too 'complex' for me.

Are you mad at me? I always pay for my stuff, I' just wanted to see how
easy it was to break DRM on Kindles. It demonstrated that DRM is a joke
and it only is an inconvenienced to the honest the dishonest are not
even slowed down by DRM. As I explained before I bought the Zen book and
even though the book had links to download the software for free I paid
Dr. Ting for a copy, I'm not trying to rip off anyone, on the contrary
I'm going out of my way to support the Forth industry. I don't know if
you noticed but I did not name the software that was used to test DRM to
give lazy people ideas.

The real culprit here besides the crooks is Amazon who make people such
as myself who has spent $1000s of dollars on eBooks worry all the time
about the books becoming useless at a future date because of Amazon
shenanigans.

I guess he is, I just got unfriended on Facebook, makes you wonder about
people, reacting without reading my comment to see that I was not

Sorry Cecil, if you want to show your intelligence by teaching the whole community how to open the difficult lock - even if it is your own lock as example - you are just plain silly as you do not grasp what you are doing. Showing others how to to start criminal activity.

Please do not buy any further of my eBooks - you are definitely not part of my target community.

Not that I was inclined to buy DRM protected works anyway, but I
certainly won't be buying anything you have published. You need to
learn how to treat your customers.

Interesting, what software did I used, what was the procedure? You would
not know because I didn't spell it out. You don't think people know the
stuff is out there in the Internet?

If it makes you feel better by being mad, so be it, your choice,
obviously it's becoming apparent to me that it's no great loss if that
how you react.

He very clearly is over reacting. I understand you were not advocating
anything. You simply reported what you found.

The funny part is as someone else pointed out, there is very likely no
piracy going on as there are so few who would even be interested in
these pubs. It is a bit like Trump talking about the millions of
illegal votes cast in the US Presidential election.

You are as bad a Hugh. Anyone who posts something you don't like makes
them evil.

Cecil clearly said he *buys* the books and software, "I also bought his
latest literature on the esp8266 and bought the software". What do you
want, a total ban on talking about DRM?

Cecil didn't tell anyone how to crack DRM. He said it could be cracked,
which we all already knew anyway. He didn't say how to do it.
